Tired of those archaic digital still photos? Catch up with the future with digital still photos...that move! And have sound! Amazing...

ATTHEFAIRE'S VIDEO THEATRE
by John-Paul, ATF Staff Writer

I acquired my first digital camera in 1996. It was an Epson Photo PC with a massive one megabyte of flash memory and picture resolution of 640x480. I quickly upgraded the camera to 5 megs which allowed me to capture almost one hundred images before needing to download the photos to a computer. Amazing technology, yes?

In those days, taking a digital camera somewhere always got questions. "What is it?" they would ask. "A digital camera," I would reply. "A what?" they'd ask. Soon I found it much easier to describe as a "computer camera." They still didn't quite know what that meant, but they at least had an idea it involved a computer.

This week I backed up my digital photo collection and discovered that it now fills over five CDs! Between AtTheFaire.com and DisneyFans.com I have an archive of well over 20,000 public photos. I honestly still don't consider myself a photographer, nor do I claim to know a thing about taking pictures, yet I easily have more picture taking "experience" that anyone else I know who.

It's just unfortunate that quantity does not ensure quality...

I can stop anytime I want.

JPG taking JPGs...I had to stop using this camera, so in September of 2000 I purchased my second digital camera: a Sony DSC-70. This gadget had an 8 megabyte flash card with it and I immediately added a 64 megabyte one just so I could take "a few more pictures." Soon I bought another 64MB card (which I lost at Disneyland, darnit, and had to replace). With these memory cards I can now take more than 6000 images before I need to download. At least I no longer carried the Epson around everywhere I went...

I quickly found that my battery pack would give away long before the memory ran out so I had to buy a few more of those. To compensate, I started taking pictures at the next higher resolution. Now I can generate images that are about 500K each (which, of course, no one wants to download unless they are on a cable modem -- be careful what you ask for; all those who asked for higher resolution images now have to spend ten times as long looking at each picture). Don't even try to explain what good a 9MB image is -- at the highest settings I can create a megapixel photo too large to even fit on the original flash card that came with the camera!

What does this have to do with video?

In 1999 I acquired a digital camcorder and I started taking video of festivals. I have jousts, swordplay, belly dancers, and tons of other things archived away on hours of tapes. My original intent was to convert much of this to video files and make it available online. So far, the only thing I have done is create some promotional clips for the Washer Well Wenches and the Renaissance Foundation.

You may have noticed a section of AtTheFaire 2.0 called Video Theatre which has been there since January 2000 yet it remained empty up until recently. That's right: "until recently." Those of you who are signed up the mailing list should recall an announcement about MPEG video clips being available. These were taken on my Sony camera in an effort to fill up the memory without having to take thousands of pictures. So far, it seems to be working. I have 140 movie clips to share with you. (If you are interested in Disneyland, check out my DisneyFans.com Audio/Video Gallery for some theme park sights and sounds.)

Please stop by this seldom visited and somewhat hidden section of AtTheFaire.com and let me know what you think. I have a few more faires to attend this year, and maybe I can stop taking so many pictures ... and start taking more movies.
