Everybody needs a good rennie movie. In the meantime, rent Braveheart, Monty Python's Holy Grail or Shakespeare in Love! ![]() |
A KNIGHT'S TALE
Today I got an e-mail from the site saying that they had finally put the trailer up on the site, and of course I scurried over there as quickly as I could. AMAZING! It was almost like being at a really good faire! And even best is that they have moved the release date up from "Summer 2001" to May 11, 2001, so we get to see it all that much sooner! The movie was written and directed by Brian Helgeland (who also wrote L.A. Confidential, Conspiracy Theory & Payback), and stars Heath Ledger (The Patriot) as William Thatcher, the peasant squire noted in the above plotline. He's appropriately dashingly handsome (although I don't think he ever dons a kilt, so he's not ALL that), and seems to be quite a smoothy with the ladies. One of his sidekicks is Roland (the Washer Well Wenches hold that name dear thanks to Hanlon-Lees), who is played by Mark Addy, the "pudgy one" from The Full Monty. I love this guy! But I digress...as usual. So, the plot thickens when the actual knight has an "untimely demise", and the poor peasant squire sees the opportunity to step in and become famous and rich. The unfortunate thing is that only nobility can compete in the tournament. So what does the squire do? What every squire would do! He lies! William Thatcher then becomes Sir Ulrich Von Lichtenstein of Gelderland. Well, it sounds noble! The plot thickens even more when you find out that the squire can't joust. But that's a trivial matter which I'm sure will be forgotten when it is realized that he's one of those naturals at jousting or something. Of course he'll be the best and become the champion and win the girl...and then they'll find out he's lying, which will get things even thicker! I'm really looking forward to seeing this movie when it's released. The arch-nemesis-type-person, Count Adhemar, is played by Rufus Sewell, whom I thoroughly enjoyed in Dangerous Beauty and Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet. The beautiful maiden who can be seen in the trailer has no name credit as of yet, but she is Berenice Bejo, who has only been in French films until now. There looks to be a really interesting mix of new talent and people who have been around a while. And look for decent accents, as almost everyone is from the UK. I predict this will be a great rennie movie. I hope they don't let me down. Until May 11, go see the trailer and register on the site. They promise to be soon launching the full site, which will contain "an amazing 3-D sword fighting game that lets you challenge your friends and foes alike to don armor and do battle online." You're supposed to also be able to make your own coat of arms. Should be spiffy! I'll keep you in the loop. |
