WILLA'S FAIRE MEMORIES
by Willa, ATF Staff Writer

I have a lot of memories from what I like to call my past life, but which was merely the time before my divorce in '99. One of the highlights was getting the opportunity to attend the 1999 Scarborough Faire in Texas with Danicia de Lontra (AKA FaireFreak) where I got to meet a whole slew of AFR (the alt.fairs.renaissance newsgroup) otters like Rengeek, Eek, Ivy and Marci. It was my first experience with "bodicing up" in the parking lot and the first time I got to enjoy the collective "bodice-gasm" of dozens of women after hours unlacing at the same time. That faire seemed to be part of a whole other universe, unable to be marred by real life, up on a fairy tale-like pedestal.

I also have wonderful memories of meeting half-drunk, high-on-adrenaline people around the campfires after-hours while being a member of the Knights of Saint George. The Clann Tartan made an impact on me that will likely never wane... *wink*

But I have to say that the most REAL and cherished memories have come from the 2000 faire season wherein I met the most people of my entire faire career and made some of the greatest and most genuine friends of my life. Odd how that happens, isn't it? You go to faire dressed in clothing you'd never wear in your regular life, speaking in an accent that isn't yours with a name that you made up and yet you get to meet people and shockingly get to see how they really are.

During the spring events of Salisbury and Wybreg Village, I got to meet the jousters (and squires!) of Hanlon-Lees Action Theatre who will forever have a special place in my memory banks...Jay, Spark, and Mary especially. (VODKA!) I also got my first experience at being ultimately wenchy while selling (or giving out, as it was in this case) roses at Salisbury. It seems like so long ago, but it was only just a year ago!

I made the most friends at the spring event of Wybreg Village, and I think a lot of that had to do with the fact that I was blessed with the ability to stay in Bonaparte during the week between the faires. Brock, the Renaissance Foundation president, is one of my dearest friends, and I got to hang out with not only the jousters, but the great people behind Ye Olde Publicke Taverne (who made sure I was well-entertained in exchange for my making sure they were all well-showered). That week between was an amazing time. Drench the wench will never be the same again...

For those who don't know me as Lindsy, I'm a fairly reticent person who tends to be on the shy side. However, as Willa, I get to forget about those impairments and just have fun. I've had the opportunity to see people put their best foot forward, and for others to get their foot stuck so far up their bums they'll likely never be able to walk again.

Having the pleasure to meet two people who have become very important to me — Sheila and Keirra, my fellow Washer Well Wenches — has considerably changed me! I'm now a part of an actual performance troupe! Who'da thunkit?

And we can't forget those wonderful acts to whom I've become a "groupie"...Shattock and Naughty Nobles and Hanlon-Lees and Orkes & Trolles...and we can't forget Sauboo the War Troll.

A very touching moment for me was finally being able to meet the woman who really made me want to be a rennie, Verna Atkins. She was the queen at most of the faires I worked with the Knights of Saint George and her style and grace made me ITCH to be more involved in faire. I now can call her my friend and for that I wouldn't trade all the bodices in Pendragon Costumes's closet.

However, none of most of the above would be even remotely possible without the best faire person I've ever had to joy to know...John-Paul. He makes every faire 1000% more fun just by being there with me. Yes, he's annoying, but that's why we love him so much. He's my best friend, my rose rogue and a pursuer of all women. But more than that, he's mine. And he's an all-encompassing faire just on his own.

Thank you to everyone who has helped me make these memories so I can actually have something fun to look back on when I'm 95. I look forward to having even more memorable moments in 2001...
