LORD HIGH EXECUTIONER: An Unashamed Look at Hangmen, Headsmen, and
Their Kind I have a bit of a confession to make. I love historical non-fiction! And my favourite way to find a good book to read in that genre is to go to Half-Price Books and look on their $1 - $3 Bargain Bookshelves. That's where I found this book, which I have to admit was not something I ever would have found to read otherwise. Lord High Executioner (hereby shortened to LHE for this article), drew me to it by being about one of those subjects that everyone's interested in, but is afraid to admit it. Just the painting on the front cover evoked emotion from me, so I had to read it...and I'm glad I did! LHE was written by Howard Engel, who not only is normally a fictional writer, but is also a self-declared anti-capital punishment type of guy. At first, I thought this would kind of make the book harder to read, but his views actually added a flavour that wouldn't have been there otherwise. Engel included as many execution stories as he could, it seemed, and it helped put the job of executioner into perspective...it made those pulling the levers a bit more human and made you realize just how difficult their job would have been. Engel covers just about every type of execution style from the beginning of capital punishment until the various means were ended. He tells of executioners from all different countries and ways of life, which makes the book that much more universal. All in all, I highly recommend this book to those looking to broaden their knowledge on medieval history (and other eras as well!), and I can't wait to find some of his fiction to read, too!
